Collecting fine art photography is a fun and rewarding hobby in itself. However, it is a good idea to come up with an approach and a budget. Many collectors choose either to go with a large collection of less expensive prints, or a smaller collection of more expensive prints. A specific artist, a particular subject matter, or a type of style you are interested in may influence your strategy. Whenever possible, ask about the photograph-- what compelled the photographer to capture this image, what was the photographer's frame of mind at the time, and so forth. Doing so will make the print more valuable to you.

Caring For Your Collection

Whatever your budget happens to be, your photography collection is a valuable investment, and properly caring for your photographs will make them last longer. It is highly recommended to place your photographs in frames using glass with UV (Ultraviolet) filtering capabilities in order to minimize fading. Keep in mind that photographic prints usually last 3-4 times longer than digital prints.
